The world learned about the death of legendary singer-songwriter Bill Withers on Friday. Although his musical heyday came in the 1970s, Withers’ influence stretches through the decades and his amazing songs — sometimes sad, sometimes happy, but always full of heart and feeling — will undoubtedly continue to inspire musicians in the future.
So it’s no surprise that Withers was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2015 by one of the artists he influenced, Stevie Wonder, who Withers would perform with alongside another musician heavily influenced by Withers from a younger generation, John Legend. Having stepped away from music in the 1980s, Withers’ briefly performing with Wonder and Legend on “Lean On Me” was a rare and special occurrence.
The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame recently shared video from Withers induction including Stevie Wonder’s words, Bill’s acceptance speech and performances of the Withers classics “Use Me,” “Lean On Me” and “Ain’t No Sunshine.” To remember Bill Withers, check out his Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction below for this special edition of Sunday Cinema:
