Sammy, Spencer & Jeff Tweedy Cover Grateful Dead For ‘The Tweedy Show’

JamBase would like to issue an apology to The Tweedy Family. As “clients” of Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy and the semi-regular “The Tweedy Show” on Jeff’s wife Sue’s Instagram that also features the couple’s sons, Spencer Tweedy and Sammy Tweedy, we think the family is doing a tremendous service by providing viewers with an escape from the issues the world is currently facing. With that in mind, we couldn’t help but share what we thought was a wonderful tribute to Bill Withers on Monday. Well, apparently Jeff didn’t agree with that decision, for which we’re sorry. Yet, our readers are “clients” too and we’ll continue to shine a light on “The Tweedy Show” with the aim that more music fans can enjoy the escapism we do when watching.

Monday’s “The Tweedy Show” included a cover of the Grateful Dead‘s “Ripple” sung by Sammy featuring Jeff on guitar and Spencer using his hands and knees to provide percussive accompaniment. The rendition of the Garcia/Hunter classic came after a version the previous day was cut off by Instagram’s time limit and followed Jeff lodging a complaint against JamBase and the “Lean On Me” article published yesterday. Jeff called it “his worst performance ever” and one of his sons joked, “we considered suing them.” The Wilco frontman went on to add, “It was just a sweet notion to honor Bill Withers. It wasn’t meant for public consumption, it was just hanging out with our clients online and there it is … career-ender.” Susie then hilariously changes the subject.

Watch Jeff Tweedy lodge a complaint against JamBase:

“Ripple” was one of the last songs performed on yesterday’s “The Tweedy Show.” Additional tunes played during the hour-long episode were Uncle Tupelo’s “Wait Up,” Doug Sahm’s “I Wanna Be Your Mama Again,” Badfinger’s “No Matter What,” Wilco’s “Passenger Side,” Arthur Russell’s “I Couldn’t Sing It To Your Face” and “Reincarnation” by Roger Miller. See “Ripple” below:

As Susie mentioned in the video mentioning JamBase, she gave permission for Kate Vassos to post rips of the episodes on YouTube. While last night’s installment began at a new time of 9 p.m. CT after previous episodes started at 9:30 p.m. CT, there wasn’t a final decision made on future start times nor did the family decide whether they will take tonight or tomorrow off from “The Tweedy Show.” So, for now, the program isn’t listed on the JamBase Livestreams Calendar. However, JamBase will soon add Thursday and Friday to the calendar once a decision on start time has been clarified. Again, we’d like to thank Jeff, Sue, Spencer and Sammy for entertaining us and the rest of their “clients” while we’re all stuck at home.

Here’s most of the episode from last night captured by Kate Vassos:
