Brendan Bayliss of Umphrey’s McGee delivered another installment of his Winenot livestream series on Friday night. The guitarist would bookend his set with Bill Withers covers on the day the world learned of the legendary singer-songwriter’s death.

Bayliss kicks things off with the feel-good Withers classic “Lovely Day” followed by “Liar,” a song from he and the late great Jeff Austin’s band, 30db. Next up, Brendan dedicated Paul Simon’s “American Tune” to New York City ahead of a cover of Ryan Adams’ “Magnolia Mountain.” The song appears on Ryan Adams and The Cardinals’ 2008 double LP, Cold Roses. Bayliss delivered the first Umphrey’s song of the night next with “Gone For Good.” UM last played the tune two years ago during their 2018 run at the Belly Up in Aspen, Colorado. The 2018 Belly Up performance marked the first time the song had been played in nearly a year and a half as per All Things Umphrey’s.

Brendan would continue with Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bookends” before returning to UM material with “Passing.” The song was last played by Umphrey’s more than a year ago. Then Baylis honored John Prine, who is currently battling COVID-19, with a cover of the legendary singer-songwriter’s “In Spite Of Ourselves,” which saw Brendan’s wife Annie Bayliss joining in for a duet. Prine’s “In Spite Of Ourselves” appears on the 1999 duet album of the same name and is originally a team-up with singer-songwriter Iris DeMent. Bob Dylan’s “Mama, You’ve Been On My Mind” — with lyrics changed to “Marco, you’ve been on mind” — came next ahead of Christopher Cross’ “Sailing.” The guitarist then delivered UM’s “August” into “Alex’s House” and back into “August” before closing out the session on the piano with Billy Joel’s “Vienna” and Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me.”
