Joel Cummins of Umphrey’s McGee mixed originals and covers of songs by Radiohead, Phish, Debussy and more during his Plays The Living Room B Sides solo piano session on Wednesday. The 15-tune performance spanned over 65 minutes and was livestreamed via Umphrey’s YouTube and the JamBase Livestreams Calendar.
Cummins, who will contribute his portion of donations to Team UM
to the Jerry & Susan Cummins educational scholarships, began his set with UM rarity “Salamander Strut.” The full band last played “Salamander Strut” in 1999. Joel then performed “D’yer Maker D’yer Semba,” a song he wrote for his wife Dasha before tackling the Billy Joel instrumental “Root Beer Rag” and Claude Debussy’s “Hommage à Rameau” and “Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum.” The pianist’s version of the latter Debussy tune gave way to a portion of “The Lizards” by Phish.
Joel continued his set with Dave Grusin’s “Memphis Stomp” and “Blue In Green,” a tune Miles Davis composed with Bill Evans. Cummins then provided an improvisational passage that led into “Everything In Its Right Place” by Radiohead. The keyboardist went on to connect the Umphrey’s McGee gems “Kimble” and “Final Word” before covers of Randy Newman’s “Louisana 1927” and The Allman Brothers Band’s “Jessica.” Cummins belted out UM’s “Hajimemashite” next and then welcomed his daughter, Willa Quinn, to say hello and blow a kiss to the audience ahead of the “Linus & Lucy” finale.
