Gold Coast singer-songwriter Amy Shark has apologised after a video she posted of herself on social network TikTok drew criticism online over the weekend.
Shark uploaded the video last month, in which she lip-syncs to an audio track taken from an old stand-up routine by comedian Anjelah Johnson. In the audio clip, Johnson impersonates a Vietnamese nail technician. The audio is popular on the video platform.

The video drew attention after it was shared over the weekend by comedian Nina Oyama. In since-deleted tweets, Oyama called the video “stupid bullshit” and added “Don’t cancel Amy Shark. Just get her to delete it and maybe explain to her why it’s bad.”
Shark was quickly criticised for the video on social media, with the ‘I Said Hi’ singer accused of perpetuating a racist stereotype. Earlier today, Shark took to Twitter to publicly issue an apology.
“I am sorry if I offended anyone, I can see that the TikTok i posted a couple of weeks ago was silly and inappropriate and honestly I never meant to cause any upset. I have taken down the video. love you all,” she wrote.
