Cris Jacobs Performs Grateful Dead-Themed Set For Livestream

132

Cris Jacobs conducted a Grateful Dead-themed livestream set on Saturday (May 2) via Deadheadland TV. The singer-songwriter and guitarist delivered Dead classics like “Brown-Eyed Women,” “Tennessee Jed,” “Dark Star” and “Deal” as well as tunes from the Jerry Garcia solo catalog and more.

Jacobs kicked things off with “Mississippi Half Step Uptown Toodeloo” on acoustic guitar followed by “Brown-Eyed Women,” “Peggy-O” and the Charlie Monroe bluegrass number “Rosa Lee McFall” ahead of “Sugaree.” “Babe It Ain’t No Lie,” a song by legendary singer-songwriter Elizabeth Cotten, came next. The song was covered by Jerry Garcia as well as the Grateful Dead. Another Jerry Garcia staple, Bob Dylan’s “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry” followed by more JGB material in “Senor” and “Spike Driver Blues” by Mississippi John Hurt for which Jacobs busted out the cigar box guitar played lap steel style with a slide. Jacobs stayed on the cigar box for “Samson & Delilah.”

Cris then continued on his standard electric guitar with “Stagger Lee” and “I’ll Take A Melody” ahead of a trio of career-spanning Grateful Dead tunes including “Tennessee Jed,” “So Many Roads” and “Dark Star” — the latter saw Cris adding some looping effects — which then led into the JBG staple “Don’t Let Go” by Jesse Stone. The poignant “Stella Blue” followed ahead of The Meters’ A-Hey Pocky Way” and the rocking Dead classic “Deal.” The latter GD number, “Days Between,” came next followed by the Bob Weir/John Perry Barlow-penned “Looks Like Rain.” “Lucky Old Sun “ would preface set closer, Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.”
