Happy Birthday Stevie Nicks: Fleetwood Mac Rock Hall Induction & Performances

173

Only 23 musicians have been inducted twice into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and the most recent to accomplish that honor was Stevie Nicks, who was born in Phoenix of this date in 1948. Nicks entered the Rock Hall as a solo artist in 2019, 21 years after her induction as a member of Fleetwood Mac. JamBase celebrates Stevie’s 72nd birthday by compiling video — many of which were just shared on the museum’s YouTube page today — featuring her appearances at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on January 13, 1998 when Fleetwood Mac entered the Rock Hall.

Stephanie Lynn Nicks came into the world on May 26, 1948 and was introduced to music by her grandfather at the tender age of four. The pair would sing duets together which foreshadowed what lied ahead for Stevie, a nickname her family gave to her after she mispronounced her name as “tee-dee” as a youngster. Stevie moved around the Southwest throughout her childhood and adolescence due to her father’s career as a business executive. While the constant shifting left her without a steady group of friends, she found her escape in music and by the time she graduated high school had learned to play the guitar and written her first song.

Another major moment of her time in high school was meeting Lindsey Buckingham, who would become both her musical and romantic partner. Stevie and Lindsey embarked on a career as a duo and scored a deal with a major label. While the pair’s debut studio album, Buckingham Nicks, did so poorly they were dropped from the label, the LP’s “Frozen Love” caught the attention of Mick Fleetwood. Mick asked Lindsey to join Fleetwood Mac during a call on New Year’s Eve 1974 and the drummer acquiesced to Buckingham’s demand that he and Nicks were a package deal.

With the additions of Stevie and Lindsey, the classic Fleetwood Mac lineup was solidified and it didn’t take long for the group to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world. 1975’s Fleetwood Mac topped the Billboard 200 chart thanks in large part to the success of the Stevie Nicks-penned “Rhiannon.” However, it was 1977’s Rumours that made Fleetwood Mac a household name and became one of the best selling albums of all-time. Nicks’ romantic relationship with Buckingham ended between the release of Fleetwood Mac and the making of Rumours, which led to animosity between the pair that boiled over numerous times and eventually was one of the reasons behind Lindsey’s multiple departures from the band.

Nicks used the often long breaks between Fleetwood Mac tours and records to launch her solo career. In 1981, Stevie released her debut solo album, Bella Donna, which topped the Billboard 200 and included such hits as “Edge Of Seventeen,” “Leather & Lace” and “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” — a collaboration with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. While the follow-up, 1983’s The Wild Heart, didn’t do quite as well, it was supported by a successful tour that saw her perform in arenas and amphitheaters as well as the occasional theater and established Nicks as a formidable concert draw in her own right.

The 1980s were filled with more hits from Nicks both with Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist. Stevie left Fleetwood Mac for a period in the 1990s but returned along with the rest of the classic lineup for a huge tour in 1997 and has been a member of the group ever since. Nicks has won many awards and received many honors over the course of her career. Fleetwood Mac was inducted into the Rock Hall in 1998 and she was inducted as a solo artist in 2019.
