On May 4, 2012, Adam “MCA” Yauch died at the age of 47, three years after being diagnosed with cancer. A principal member of the Beastie Boys, Yauch was an integral creative component of the influential hip-hop group that was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame just months before his untimely death.
In their recently published book and documentary, surviving Beastie Boys Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz continuously praise Yauch’s contributions to the often groundbreaking music they created. Much of their success and innovative approach to making records is directly attributed to Yauch’s knowledge and creative vision. Yauch was a talented MC, musician, producer and filmmaker as well as dedicated human rights activist and supporter of Tibetan independence. A playground in Brooklyn Heights New York was dedicated to Yauch in 2013.
Back in 1999, the Beastie Boys were on tour in support of their album, Hello Nasty, stopping on May 3 at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow, Scotland. The tour saw the Beasties performing in the round with DJ Mix Master Mike. The performance was recorded for an MTV live concert series that aired in November 1999.
Included in the episode were Hello Nasty tracks “Intergalactic,” “Three Mc’s and One DJ,” “Body Movin’” and “Remote Control,” alongside Beastie favorites “Root Down,” “Shake Your Rump,” “So What’cha Want” and more. The performance concluded with MCA, Ad-Rock and Mike D playing instruments — as they do at other points in the show — for a blistering take on “Sabotage.” Watch the concert from May 3, 1999 below:
