Jeff Tweedy & Tweedy Band Back Daniel Johnston On ‘Walking The Cow’ In 2017: Pro-Shot Video

146

While acclaimed singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston died this past September, his legacy lives on. Johnston inspired the Hi, How Are You Project, an organization that aims to drive awareness and education about mental health. The Hi, How Are You Project unveiled pro-shot video of Johnston performing his original “Walking The Cow” in Chicago with Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy and the rest of the Tweedy band in 2017.

The footage was shot at The Vic Theatre in Chicago on October 2017 during Daniel Johnston’s final tour. Johnston tapped a number of different bands to back him at various stops of the run and chose Tweedy for the shows in Chicago. The Tweedy band features Jeff’s son, Spencer Tweedy on drums as well as multi-instrumentalist Liam Kazar, bassist Darin Gray and guitarist James Elkington.

Daniel Johnston originally released “Walking The Cow” on his 1983 album Hi, How Are You. The song was the third song Johnston and company played on October 18, 2017 at The Vic and two days later was performed in the middle of the set at the same venue. Watch Daniel Johnston, Jeff Tweedy and the Tweedy band’s rendition of “Walking The Cow” after an introduction by the Wilco frontman below:
