The String Cheese Incident keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth displayed his wit and musical chops during the premiere of his Big Show livestreamed special on Thursday night. Hollingsworth split the 90-minute performance into three portions: a piano set, an organ set and a “dance party” set in which he utilized his full rig. Kyle was joined by his SCI band mate, percussionist Jason Hann for the organ set.
Kyle mixed songs from his solo repertoire with The String Cheese Incident classics and a handful of choice covers throughout. He also gave a tour of his home studio, performed a take of the Beatles’ “I’ve Just Seen A Face” on ukulele outside his house in a forest and included a hilarious commercial within the special.
Hollingsworth kicked off the piano set with SCI oldies “Close Your Eyes” and “Missin’ Me.” The keyboardist worked the latter into a cover of Miles Davis’ “All Blues” before performing the original “Boo Boo’s Pik-A-Nik.” Kyle’s solo piano rendition of the Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead gem “Deal” served as the finale of the first part of the special. Hollingsworth also fit in a few interludes where he played a bit of Phish’s “Wolfman’s Brother” and “Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The special continued with a commercial for “Kyle On Hold” before Hollingsworth took viewers outside, where he serenaded his dog Mabel with “I’ve Just Seen A Face” from the Beatles’ Help! LP. Kyle then showed off his home studio including many keyboards, pedals, a picture of his band from the 1980s and his “beer wall” of brews he’s collaborated on.
Next, Kyle headed to his Hammond B3 organ and brought in Jason Hann via video chat. Hollingsworth and Hann teamed up for the instrumental “Galactic” from the Cheese repertoire, Kyle’s solo single “Stuff” and a soulful take on Hall & Oates’ 1977 hit “Rich Girl.” A quick setbreak followed and then Hollingsworth returned to his home studio for a series of upbeat songs in which he was backed by pre-recorded tracks.
“You’ve Got The World” opened the “Dance Party” portion of the proceedings and led into a cover of Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever.” Hollingsworth went back to his solo catalog for “Take The Ride,” “Way That It Goes” and “Falling Through The Cracks.” The fan-favorite “Let’s Go Outside” seemingly was to close the special, but instead the keyboardist offered up an encore of Untying The Not instrumental “Elijah,” “Can’t Wait Another Day” from SCI’s Song In My Head LP and the Talking Heads classic “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody).” Those that kept watching were treated to scenes of Kyle and his family dancing to Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long.”
