The Fiery Furnaces released their first new song in 11 years, “Down By The So And So On Somewhere.” Issued by Third Man Records, the vinyl 7-inch comes with an exclusive B-side, “The Fortune Teller’s Revenge.”
The Fiery Furnaces was founded in New York City in 2000 by siblings Eleanor Friedberger and Matthew Friedberger. Their debut album, Gallowsbird’s Bark, was issued in 2003. Several records were released in subsequent years. The most recent The Fiery Furnaces releases were 2009’s I’m Going Away and Take Me Round Again, the latter of which Thrill Jockey called “The Friedbergers cover the Friedbergers.”
Eleanor Friedberger and Matthew Friedberger each pursued solo careers after putting The Fiery Furnaces on hiatus in 2011. The band was set to perform at this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago before it was canceled due to COVID-19.
A statement from the band reads:
Thank you for all the kind reaction you’ve given us here. You can call it a reunion if you like, as long as it’s in the sense of a family reunion. Not a band or a class reunion; we never said we broke up or moved on. In fact, we said we didn’t break up. And today we’re releasing a new song called “Down at the So and So on Somewhere”. It’s a song about having regrets, and people not being or getting back together, so it seems more sad now than it did when we recorded it back in the beginning of February. “Would you meet me?” We hope sometime soon.
