Brendan Bayliss Covers Ween, Paul Simon, John Prine & More On ‘Wine Not?’

120

Brendan Bayliss continued his Wine Not? livestream series on Friday night, 4th of July Eve. The Umphrey’s McGee guitarist delivered a number of America-themed cover songs from Ween, Paul Simon, John Prine and more as well as a bevy of UM originals about bassist Ryan Stasik.

Bayliss kicked off the set with the Simon & Garfunkel classic, “America,” on a borrowed Guild acoustic 12-string and gave a nod to his wife, Annie Bayliss, changing the line “Kathy I’m lost” to “Annie I’m lost.” Brendan followed “America” with a trio of Umphrey’s tunes: “Attachments,” “Rocker” (last time played by UM on February 3, 2018 for just the 17th time since debuting in 2006, as per All Things Umphreys) and “Wellwishers.” Next up, John Prine’s “Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore.” Bayliss kept a healthy balance of songs that both celebrate America as well as ones that are critical of it, with Prine’s “Flag Decal” certainly falling into the latter category as a Vietnam era anti-war anthem.

BB then returned to UM material with “Puppet String,” which contained a healthy portion of Ween’s “Freedom Of ‘76” as well as Umphrey’s “Gone For Good” and “Make It Right” before returning to “Puppet String” in what felt like a classic Umphrey’s segue section. Next, Brendan welcomed Annie to sing Arlo Guthrie’s “City Of New Orleans.” Bayliss then prefaced “Wife Soup” by saying, “This song is about Ryan Stasik,” referring to his Umphrey’s band mate. Brendan closed out the set as he started it, with a Paul Simon-penned song, “American Tune.” Bayliss would return for an encore of the Tears For Fears classic “Everybody Wants To Rule The World,” which he played on the piano.
