The Grateful Dead continue to notch 50th anniversary celebrations for some of their most iconic albums. 2020 marks a half-century for Workingman’s Dead and today sees the release of Workingman’s Dead: 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition.
On June 14, 1970 the Grateful Dead released Workingman’s Dead, a paradigm shift for the band from more psychedelic sounds to that of Americana. The Dead recorded the album in just 10 days at Pacific High Recording Studio in the band’s native San Francisco with their live sound engineers Bob Matthews and Betty Cantor. The new 50th anniversary edition features a remastered version of the original LP, also available as a vinyl picture disc with the deluxe edition. The set’s producer and Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux detailed the reissue in a statement:
Since we embarked on the series of Grateful Dead 50th anniversary releases, we’ve had a blast re-mastering the original albums and finding previously unreleased live material from the era for each. In 2020, we’re blessed to have two albums celebrating their 50th anniversaries, and we’re thrilled with how Workingman’s Dead has turned out. For an album as important and great as Workingman’s Dead, it seemed appropriate to double the amount of bonus material. The show we’ve selected gives a definitive overview of what the band were up to six months after the release of the album and shows the Dead sound that would largely define the next couple of years. From Workingman’s Dead through Europe ’72, the Dead’s sound was Americana, and the live show included here is a workingman’s band playing authentically honest music.
The bonus material Lemeiux speaks off is a previously unreleased concert from February 21, 1971 at famed Dead haunt the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. Taking place a little over a year and a half after the release of Workingman’s and mere months after GD’s second album, American Beauty, in a prolific 1970, The Cap concert features tunes from both album’s and showcases the Grateful Dead’s new musical direction.
To preview the reissue, the GD camp also launched the band’s first official podcast, The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast, as well as a collection of outtakes dubbed Workingman’s Dead: The Angel’s Share.
