Listen To Thelonious Monk Perform ‘Don’t Blame Me’ At A High School In 1968

55

Legendary jazz pianist Thelonious Monk played at Palo Alto High School in California on October 27, 1968 and the performance features in the upcoming, previously unheard live album, Palo Alto, due out on July 31 via Impulse! Records. The latest track from the LP is “Don’t Blame Me.”

The story of how the jazz great came to play at Palo Alto High School and how the performance was captured is an extraordinary one. Danny Scher — a junior at Palo Alto High at the time — organized the concert and the school’s janitor recorded it. Scher put on the concert in hopes of quelling tensions in his community that reflected larger issues facing the nation.

“I always looked at music as a way to put issues on hold or up to a mirror, whether they be political or social,” Scher said in a statement. “On October 27, 1968, there was a truce between Palo Alto and East Palo Alto. And that is what music does.”
