Dan Horne announced his solo debut, The Motorcycle Song EP, arriving on October 2 via Bandcamp. The Los Angeles-based producer, multi-instrumentalist and Circles Around the Sun bassist also shared the lead single, a cover of Canned Heat’s “Poor Moon.”
“Poor Moon” is a deep cut Canned Heat released in 1969, the same year as the Moon landing. Written by the band’s Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson, the song laments what Wilson sees as the inevitable pollution of the Moon. Horne — who also plays with Grateful Shred and Jonathan Wilson — detailed the cover in a statement:
I’ve always felt a connection to Canned Heat, maybe because of the California roots, but I think Sam Blasucci first played me this rather obscure gem on a long drive during a Grateful Shred tour to somewhere. I tracked all the instruments alone quarantined in my studio, but when it became apparent that I needed to add electric sitar, I asked Jonathan Wilson to borrow one of his. “Poor Moon” felt like an appropriate song for the times. It’s totally absurd, but also relevant in portraying our current sense of existential dread. And I thought it would be fun for me to sing all of those doo-wop backing vocals.

Horne’s The Motorcycle Song EP also features original instrumentals “Blackjack” and “Rhythm 55” as well as the record’s titular track, a cover of Arlo Guthrie’s “The Motorcycle Song.”
