Dave Koz shared a cover of The Beatles’ “Yesterday” featuring bassist Meshell Ndegeocello. The song will land on the renowned saxophonist’s upcoming album, A New Day, set for release on October 9.
Koz enlisted the help of award-winning singer-songwriter Matt Cusson — known for his work with Stevie Wonder, Anderson .Paak and more — to co-produce the track and add additional vocals. The choice cover also sees Adam Hawley on electric guitar along with Ndegeocello. Koz spoke about the genesis of the collab in a statement.
“To enhance that wistful feeling we were aiming for,” he said, “I reached out to the brilliant Meshell Ndegeocello, who transformed the song with her completely unique bassline.”
Koz also releated how the famed Paul McCartney-penned song has taken on new meaning during the pandemic. Read his words below:
Listening to the prophetic lyrics, if you apply them within the framework of the pandemic, it literally was yesterday that our lives were completely different. To me, A New Day is an album that reflects the reality that we’re going somewhere new. But to get to that destination, you have to have your eyes wide open, while remembering where it is you came from. So, it’s important to reflect that just yesterday, it was all very different. And while we can’t necessarily go back to that innocence, the prospect of a bright tomorrow is something we all can focus on.
