Greensky Bluegrass Debuts Hot Rize Cover At ‘Leap Year Session’ #6

102

Greensky Bluegrass delivered Leap Year Session #6 on Friday from The Pageant in St. Louis. The band unveiled a cover from progressive bluegrass pioneers Hot Rize two songs into the set.

As they’ve done with previous sessions, GSBG shared a preview video of the stream that saw guitarist Dave Bruzza speaking eloquently about the band, their fans and being apart during the pandemic. Greensky then kicked things off with Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freight Liner Blues,” which saw the band firing on all cylinders as they passed the solos around. The classic “Tuesday Letter” came next before mandolinist Paul Hoffman led the band through the Hot Rize number, “Shadows In My Room” for the first time. Hot Rize bassist Nick Forster wrote the song which appears on the 1987 album Untold Sotires.

Next, “Take Cover” came ahead of the rarity, “Beauty And Pain,” played for just the ninth time since debuting in 2009, as per Phantasy Tour, with all the plays save for the debut coming between 2016 and 2020. GSBG continued with Joshua Davis’ “Last Winter In The Copper Country” ahead of “Grow Bananas” and Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece.” “Do Harm” from the band’s 2019 album, All For Money, came next followed by Paul Simon’s “Gumboots” and “I’d Probably Kill You.” Greensky Bluegrass closed out the set with “Don’t Lie.”
