A little over one year ago, singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile and fellow singer-songwriters Amanda Shires, Maren Morris and Natalie Hemby released their self-titled debut album as The Highwomen. The highly collaborative project that also featured Sheryl Crow, Yola, Jason Isbell, Peter Levin and Carlile’s longtime band mates Phil Hanseroth and Tim Hanseroth, is indicative of Carlile’s openness to sharing the studio and live stage with other musicians.
Carlile and The Highwomen only made a few live appearances last year, which included a few promotional performances for television and radio. The group visited SiriusXM and were guests on The Howard Stern Show, performing their original “Highwomen” and a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.” Watch those two performances below:
Carlile’s participation in The Highwomen is far from her only collaboration over her 15+ year career. John Prine & Sturgill Simpson
“I wouldn’t be the songwriter I am today without [John Prine], that’s an understatement,” Carlile said as part of a video series honoring of Prine’s induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. Sturgill Simpson was also part of the video series and stated, “I was asked to pick out my favorite John Prine song, which is like asking everybody what their favorite kind of barbecue is.”
Prine, who died in April at age 73 due to COVID-19, was accompanied by Carlile and Simpson during an appearance in 2018 on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Carlile sang on Prine’s album, The Tree Of Forgiveness, and along with Simpson, helped perform the record’s tender track, the timely “Summer’s End.”

Dave Matthews
Carlie’s affinity for Prine was evident early on when she incorporated Prine’s beloved “Angel From Montgomery” into her live sets. In the summer of 2011, Carlile, who was raised and currently resides near Seattle, performed a set at the city’s Woodland Park Zoo.
Fellow current Seattle area resident Dave Matthews, who held a surprise performance at the zoo the day prior, made another surprise visit to see the animals — and guest with Carlile on “Angel From Montgomery” during her own zoo concert. The next summer, Matthews tapped Carlile to open a batch of the Dave Matthews Band’s Summer Tour 2012 shows.
Carlile and Matthews reprised their “Angel From Montgomery” duet, treating early-arriving fans at Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wisconsin to the Prine cover. The pair have gone on to collaborate on “Angel From Montgomery” — also a staple of Matthews’ live repertoire — several additional times since.

Tanya Tucker
Carlile did far more than make a guest appearance on Tanya Tucker’s 2019 album, While I’m Livin’, which earned the 61-year-old Tucker the Grammy Awards Best Country Album and for Best Country Song for the Carlile/Hansertoths/Tucker co-write “Bring My Flowers Now.” Carlile and Shooter Jennings co-produced While I’m Livin’, Tucker’s first album of new material since 2002 and her first of any kind since her 2009 covers collection.
Both Carlile and Jennings were on stage with Tucker for her 2019 appearance on The Ellen Show. The collaborative performance for the syndicated daytime talk show consisted of “Hard Luck,” one of the few songs on While I’m Livin’ not written by Carlile and Tucker.

Dolly Parton
Carlile’s collaborative spirit might have been best on display at the 2019 Newport Folk Festival. The Highwomen made one of their rare public appearances, performing on the fest’s first day. But it was a set led by Carlile to close out the second day of Newport ‘19 that brought an impressive lineup of musicians on stage together at Fort Adams State Park.
The final set on Saturday was billed as “
: The Collaboration,” and it truly lived up to its promise. Carlile led an endless stream of collaborations that celebrated female musicians. Other participants included the Newport legend Judy Collins, as well as Highwomen Sheryl Crow and Yola, as well as Maggie Rogers, Lucy Dacus, Jade Bird, Rachael Price and Bridget Kearney of Lake Street Dive, Amy Ray of Indigo Girls, Molly Tuttle and Courtney Marie Andrews and others.
Collins was not the only legend that graced the Fort Adams stage that evening, as renowned country singer-songwriter Dolly Parton was brought on to lead takes on “Eagle When She Flies,” “Just Because I’m a Woman,” “Jolene” and “9 to 5,” as well as Dolly and Brandi dueting on “I Will Always Love You.”

Jim James & Joe Russo
Another memorable Carlile collaboration occurred during a set at another festival, this time at the LOCKN’ fest held in August 2017 in Arrington, Virginia. My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James played a solo set that saw Carlile emerge for an extensive collaboration. Carlile and James linked up for a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ In The Wind” and the MMJ favorite “Wonderful (The Way I Feel).”
Drummer Joe Russo was at LOCKN’ 2017 to play with his band Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. Russo came out during Carlile’s sit-in with James to bang out the rhythm to the Plastic Ono Band’s classic anthem, “Give Peace A Chance.”
