John Frusciante wasn’t going to let something as trivial as rejoining the Red Hot Chili Peppers distract him from his solo career. On Tuesday, the accomplished guitarist announced Maya, the first full-length project he has released under his own name since 2014.
Upon leaving RHCP, Frusciante explored his interests in electronic music, most notably under the stage name Trickfinger. As Trickfinger he put out one LP in 2015, as well as a number of EPs including 2020’s She Smiles Because She Presses The Button as well as Look Down, See Us.

Along with the Maya announcement, Frusciante also shared the single “Amethblowl”. Despite the change of name, the sound still carries over from Trickfinger. “Amethblowl” opens with grainy 8-bit effects that eventually get met with distant ominous piano as well as overwhelming glitchy sound effects that form the percussive base. In short, Frusciante is still way out there.
“For a full year before I started this record, I worked within self-imposed limitations and rules that made the music-making process as difficult as possible, programming for programming’s sake,” Frusciante said in a statement. “After a full year of that, I decided to make things easier, to the degree that I could regularly finish tracks I enjoyed listening to, while continuing many of the practices I‘d developed. Throughout the recording of Maya, I would prepare to make each track very slowly, but would finish tracks very quickly. I’d spend weeks making breakbeats, souping up a drum machine, making DX7 patches, and so on. By the time an idea came up that seemed like the beginning of a tune, I had a lot of fresh elements ready to go.”
