The lone studio album from Derek and the Dominos, 1970’s Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, will see an expanded re-release later this year in honor of the record’s 50th anniversary. The four-LP deluxe package was announced by UMe/Polydor on Tuesday.
Derek and the Dominos found Eric Clapton at an interesting crossroads in his career. Following the breakup of Blind Faith and his departure from Delaney & Bonnie, and not yet at the level of solo recognition he would eventually attain, he rounded up a lineup of his former Delaney & Robbie compatriots to embark on a new musical adventure. Along the way, he befriended Duane Allman shortly before his tragic death, and Derek and the Dominos was born.
The 50th anniversary reissue of Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs will come in a four-LP format. The first two records will contain the original album which has received the “Half-Speed Mastered” treatment by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios and is completed with a certificate of authentication. As for the other two records, they will contain bonus material previously unreleased on vinyl.
The third LP features a number of studio outtakes as well as a pair of songs produced by Phil Spector on side A. On the other side are a several live cuts from the band’s appearance on the short-lived Johnny Cash Show, including a rendition of “Matchbox” featuring Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. Finally, the fourth record features seven tracks that were originally recorded for Derek and the Dominos’ ill-fated second album. Five of these tracks have never been released on vinyl, and all come from the group’s April/May 1971 recording sessions.
The 50th anniversary box set for Derek & The Dominos’ Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs also includes a 12×12 book of sleeve notes taken from the previously released 40th anniversary edition. The box set is available exclusively through uDiscover and The Sound of Vinyl. Click here for more information and to order the collection. See a full tracklist below.
