Little Feat teamed up remotely to record a new version of “Long Distance Love” and to create a video for the track featuring new drummer Tony Leone and guest vocalist Amy Helm. “Long Distance Love” was penned by the late Lowell George for inclusion on Little Feat’s fifth studio album, 1975’s The Last Record Album.
Co-founding keyboardist Bill Payne is joined in the latest Little Feat lineup by longtime members bassist Kenny Gradney, percussionist Sam Clayton and multi-instrumentalist Fred Tackett as well as recent additions Leone and guitarist Scott Sharrard. It’s Sharrard who handles lead vocals on “Long Distance Love” with Amy Helm providing harmonies.
“Little Feat has always revolved around our songs and the musicianship that envelops them. We are proud to share with you ‘Long Distance Love’ one of our favorites from Lowell George,” reads a note from the band. “This video is presented in love and gratitude to all of you in what is an ongoing journey. From our hearts to yours. It has indeed been a season of Long Distance Love.”
The band tapped Scott Rosenbaum to direct the “Long Distance Love” video, which combines images from Little Feat’s history with footage from the recording of the track. Bill Payne detailed the process that led to “Long Distance Love” in a post on the group’s website. “Little Feat is back making music again. The experiment continues,” explained Payne towards the end of the post. “Little Feat remains true to our music that represents our legacy along with writing and performing new songs. We extend our appreciation to all of you in this continued journey. Please stay safe. We’ll meet again as soon as we possibly can.”
Little Feat also shared the song to help bring attention to The Rex Foundation’s Roadie’s Fund, which comes in partnership with Sweet Relief to help music crew members facing financial hardship. Watch the “Long Distance Love” video below:
