Perpetual Groove Debuts Bruce Springsteen Cover During Livestream Concert

111

Perpetual Groove took the stage on Friday for the first time since the pandemic started. The quartet presented a livestream concert dubbed Sweet Covidious Antidote live from the Music Matters Warehouse in Atlanta with a two+ hour performance that ended with a debut cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Ghost Of Tom Joad.”

Atlanta-based drummer Darren Stanley was behind the kit with PGroove’s Albert Suttle unable to join his band mates “due to an abundance of caution regarding safety and travel concerns.” Guitarist Brock Butler, keyboardist Matt McDonald, bassist Adam Perry and Stanley delivered a career-spanning set including plenty of fan favorites.

PGroove was surrounded by a video wall featuring fans who took part in the event via Zoom. Fittingly, “It Starts Where It Ends” served as opener and gave way to “Two Shores” before a performance of the more recently debuted original “Holy Ship.” More oldies followed along with “Eventually,” one of two songs from the band’s self-titled 2019 studio album to make the setlist. “Eventually” began a lengthy, seamless run that also included “Echo,” “Crapshoot,” “Space Paranoids,” “Sweet Oblivious Antidote” and “TTFPJ.”

“A. Retro,” the evening’s second tune from Perpetual Groove, was the penultimate song of the set. Then, Perpetual Groove lit into their debut cover of “The Ghost Of Tom Joad.” While Bruce Springsteen wrote “The Ghost Of Tom Joad” as the title track of his 1995 studio album, PGroove’s version was more akin to Rage Against The Machine’s bombastic cover.
