RHINO To Release Deluxe Reissue Of Grateful Dead’s ‘American Beauty’ For 50th Anniversary

100

The Grateful Dead and RHINO will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band’s seminal American Beauty studio album next month with a deluxe reissue due out on October 30th.

The album first released on November 1st, 1970, included original songs written by Robert Hunter and various members of the band including “Box Of Rain”, “Truckin’”, “Sugar Magnolia”, “Friend of the Devil”, “Ripple”, and more, and has since become a beloved selection out of the Dead’s career studio discography.

The forthcoming reissue will be available for purchase on 180-gram colored vinyl, a limited edition picture disc (15,000 copies), and a 3CD deluxe edition which will also come with the band’s February 18, 1971 performance at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. The performance that night saw and heard the Dead debut a mix of songs that would remain in their arsenal for years to come including “Wharf Rat”, “Playing In The Band”, “Bertha”, “Greatest Story Ever Told”, and “Loser”. Additionally, keyboardist Ned Lagin who played piano on “Candyman” sat in with the band for the February 1971 show.

The audio to be featured on all three formats has been remastered from the original 16-track master tapes and was mixed by Jeffrey Norman at Bob Weir’s TRI Studios. The forthcoming release follows the 50th-anniversary reissue of American Beauty‘s predecessor, Workingman’s Dead, which arrived on RHINO earlier this summer.

“I listened to the album two or three times that night just taking it in, living in its world, and loving it, trying to understand what this feeling was,” My Morning Jacket‘s Jim James said about American Beauty. “It wasn’t happy, nor was it sad. Yet, it reflected the presence and possibility of every emotion in the rainbow, and the recording was unbelievable. The talent and musicianship were undeniable. The lyrics melted my mind.”
