Engineers at Spotify are supposedly working to develop a “Karaoke” feature that would allow users to sing alongside their favorite songs while using the popular audio streaming app without having to compete with the pre-existing vocal tracks.

New reports which surfaced this week detail that a yet-to-be-released “Spotify Karaoke Mode” was discovered by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong, who found the in-app feature after digging around in the code of various apps to see what companies are testing earlier this month. Wong shared a screenshot of her findings online, which showcases a user-friendly layout which lets users control the volume while lyrics of the song being played show up on the screen for a read-a-long/sing-a-long experience.

A statement shared to NME following Wong’s findings read, “At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience. Some of those tests end up paving the path for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning … We have no further news to share at this time.”

The finding comes as Twitch was recently forced to close its own karaoke app, Twitch Sings, effective January 1st, 2021.
