Steve Earle Will Pay Tribute To Son Justin Townes Earle With Covers Album

Steve Earle has announced he’ll record a new album covering songs written by his son, the late Justin Townes Earle.

The country legend and his band The Dukes will head into the studio next month to begin recording the project. They’re hoping to have the album ready for a January 2021 release, to coincide with what would have been Justin Townes Earle’s 39th birthday.

All artist advances and royalties for the album will go towards a trust for the late songwriter’s daughter, Etta St. James Earle.

Justin Townes Earle died last month in his birthplace of Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 38. The singer-songwriter began his career playing in Nashville bands the Distributors and the Swindlers along with his father’s touring band.

He released a slew of acclaimed albums throughout his life, his most recent being 2019’s The Saint of Lost Causes. Earle toured Australia multiple times, including in support of The Saint of Lost Causes last year.

Further details on the album – such as the songs that will be included or a hard release date – are yet to be announced.
