Watch Tedeschi Trucks Band Beacon Theatre Residency Collaborations

131

Many yearly traditions won’t continue in 2020 thanks to the pandemic. One such postponed/canceled tradition is the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s annual residency at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, which usually takes place right around this time. The TTB’s runs at the Upper West Side venue follow in the footsteps of The Allman Brothers Band’s “March Madness” residencies at the Beacon as they typically feature collaborations with special guests and the debut of new material.

Tedeschi Trucks Band guitarist Derek Trucks is awfully familiar with the Beacon stage as he was a member of The Allman Brothers Band from 1999 through their final shows, which took place at the venue, in 2014. All told, the TTB played nine consecutive years and 39 concerts at the Beacon Theatre dating back to September 10, 2011. The first year was the only time the group performed just once at the historic theater. In 2012 and 2013, the residency was expanded to three nights before the band returned for four concerts a year in 2014 and 2015. The Tedeschi Trucks Band came back for six shows in 2016 as they did in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Over 130 Tedeschi Trucks Band videos are featured on the JamBase Live Video Archive (JBLVA). While fans won’t be able to see the TTB at the Beacon this year, there’s plenty of video from the band’s past runs to enjoy. Check out seven special collaborations from the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Beacon Theatre residencies via the JBLVA:

In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed with Dickey Betts | September 21, 2013

The Tedeschi Trucks Band welcomed The Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts to guest at the Beacon on September 21, 2013. Betts emerged towards the end of the TTB’s second of three nights at the venue that made up their 2013 residency to add to ABB classics “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” and “Blue Sky.” Dickey, who was band mates in the Allmans with Derek Trucks for portions of 1999 and 2000, returned to augment the Tedeschi Trucks Band on a cover of Elmore James’ “The Sky Is Crying” that kicked off the evening’s encore. Both “Liz Reed” and “Blue Sky” were TTB debuts as per Setlist.FM.

Eleanor Rigby with Jimmy Herring | September 20, 2014

Widespread Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring was also member of The Allman Brothers Band at the same time as Derek Trucks. The pair were part of a short-lived lineup in 2000 that followed Dickey Betts’ departure from the group. Herring sat-in with the TTB at the Beacon on September 20, 2014 — the second night of their four-show residency at the venue.

Jimmy first joined the band towards the end of their set for covers of Freddie King’s “Same Old Blues” and Derek & The Dominos’ “Keep On Growing.” Then, he returned for the TTB’s rendition of “Eleanor Rigby” by The Beatles to close out the night. Only one more Tedeschi Trucks Band performance of “Eleanor Rigby” has come since as per Setlist.FM. Jimmy Herring went on to guest with the TTB during the first night of their 2018 Beacon Theatre residency.

Heartaches By The Number with Rosanne Cash and John Leventhal | September 26, 2015

Rosanne Cash and her husband, John Leventhal, were among the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s guests at the Beacon Theatre on September 26, 2015. Charles Bradley also sat-in during the group’s second of four 2015 concerts at the venue. Cash led the TTB through their lone rendition of Guy Mitchell’s “Heartaches By The Number” towards the middle of the set with Leventhal in tow. Rosanne and John also contributed to the group’s frequently played medley featuring “Angel From Montgomery” by John Prine and the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree.”

You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere with Amy Ray | September 30, 2016

Amy Ray of Indigo Girls and her solo band opened a number of shows for the Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2016, including the concert that kicked off the TTB’s six-show residency at the Beacon. Ray then returned to the stage later in the evening on September 30, 2016 to contribute to the encore. Amy added harmony vocals to covers of Billy Taylor’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free” and Bob Dylan & The Band’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” at the end of the night.

Mountain Jam with Trey Anastasio | October 14, 2017

While Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio joined the Tedeschi Trucks Band for an instant classic set at LOCKN’ in 2019 that included a full performance of Derek & The Dominos’ iconic Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs LP, that wasn’t his first time collaborating with the band. Anastasio previously sat-in with the Tedeschi Trucks Band as part of their Beacon residency finale on October 14, 2017.

Trey emerged towards the end of the TTB’s second set to augment the 12-piece band on Leon Russell’s “Delta Lady.” However, that was just the appetizer as the main course consisted of a monumental 33+ minute “Mountain Jam.” The cover of The Allman Brothers Band instrumental, which was based on Donovan’s “There Is A Mountain,” was a TTB debut and still remains as their only “Mountain Jam” performance.

Anastasio and the Tedeschi Trucks Band kept to the ABB’s structure of the tune with the main theme followed by a string of solos. Derek went first and then keyboardist Kofi Burbridge dug in before Trey had his turn. Next, the drummers got to work with bassist Tim Lefebvre providing a bass solo that led to the bridge. A bluesy jam featuring hints of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” gave way to a return to the main theme to conclude the powerful “Mountain Jam.”

With A Little Help From My Friends with Warren Haynes | October 13, 2018

Derek’s longtime The Allman Brothers Band co-hort Warren Haynes was the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s guest at their sixth and final Beacon residency concert in 2018. Haynes joined the band for a five-song run at the end of their second set on October 13, 2018. Up first was the TTB’s first rendition of Son House’s “Preachin’ Blues” since October 7, 2016. Warren also added to a take on “Done Somebody Wrong” by Elmore James, the group’s debut cover of Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters,” original “I Want More” and the ABB classic “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.”

When the Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to the stage for their encore, they brought Warren Haynes back out with them. Haynes and the TTB closed out the 2018 residency with a performance of “With A Little Help From My Friends.” The Beatles originally recorded “With A Little Help From My Friends,” yet the ensemble’s version at the Beacon was more akin to Joe Cocker’s rendition. “With A Little Help From My Friends” hadn’t been performed by the TTB since March 4, 2017. The song also concluded the 12-piece’s 2019 Beacon run — and what stands as their most recent performance at the venue — on October 5, 2019.

Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever with Joss Stone | October 5, 2019

While the Tedeschi Trucks Band didn’t get any help from their friends on the aforementioned cover of “With A Little Help From My Friends” that closed out last year’s run, they were joined by guests earlier in the evening. The TTB’s October 5, 2019 concert at the New York City venue featured appearances from Joss Stone, Ricky Gordon and DeShawn Alexander. British soul singer Joss Stone was the first to team with the TTB, as she dueted with Susan Tedeschi on The Four Tops’ “Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever” for the second song of the second set. Later, Gordon added to “Statesboro Blues” and Alexander joined in on “How Blue Can You Get?”
