AC/DC Confirm First Studio Album Since 2014, Share Lead Single “Shot In The Dark” [Listen]

After months of speculation of a possible reunion which first began to emerge back in January, AC/DC have returned with a new single from their full Back In Black era lineup (sans the late Malcolm Young) which will appear on the hard rock band’s first album since 2014, Power Up, due out next month on November 13th.

The lead single shared on Wednesday, entitled “Shot In The Dark”, highlights the return of singer Brian Johnson along with drummer Phil Rudd and bassist Cliff Williams, who have all been away from the band for one reason or another since 2016. The hard-hitting new single hears the longtime bandmates pick up right where they left off, and Johnson hasn’t lost any power from that trademark high-pitched vocal style that made AC/DC radio mainstays and arena rock icons throughout the 1980s and 90s. “It’s been a long, long road, but it’s good that everyone came on board and we get to pump out a bit of new rock & roll for the world,” guitarist Angus Young told Rolling Stone in a new profile published this week. Young had been the only original member to keep the band alive during the last four years. “At this time, with the pandemic, hopefully it gives people a few hours of toe-tapping enjoyment.”

According to a lengthy profile, the new songs to be featured on Power Up were mainly recorded in summer 2018 and with some additional work in early 2019. The new material was recorded at Warehouse Studios in Vancouver, B.C. with help from acclaimed rock producer Brendan O’Brien. The spark for a possible reunion came when Johnson, Williams, and Rudd all traveled to Australia to attend Malcolm Young’s funeral in the fall of 2017, which acted as the catalyst for bringing the band back together.

“This record is pretty much a dedication to Malcolm, my brother,” Angus continued about his late brother. “It’s a tribute for him like ‘Back in Black’ was a tribute to Bon Scott.”

Following a solo reunion rehearsal, the band had hoped to release the album earlier this year, but COVID-19 put a halt on any promotional plans for their comeback. A potential tour is also in the works, but those plans won’t be revealed until there’s a clearer projection on when the live events industry will return in major cities across the world.

“We thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to do a couple of small shows to start?’” Johnson added about the possibility of returning to the road with their new material. “That was as far as it got. We flew home [after that meeting] and two days later the shit hit the fan. It was China and Europe and then it started spreading like wildfire. It just didn’t seem possible.”

Power Up will be available on a variety of formats, including a limited edition deluxe package, colored vinyl, black vinyl, and CD. Click here for album pre-order information.
