On Saturday, October 3rd, New Orleans funk favorites Big Sam’s Funky Nation took part in Democracy Comes Alive, a one-day, nonpartisan virtual music festival aimed at channeling the power of music to make a critical impact on civic engagement in this November’s elections and beyond.
Throughout the ongoing live music shutdown, few artists have been more prolific with live streams than Big Sam’s Funky Nation. The band’s regular performances streamed from frontman/trombonist/bandleader Big Sam Williams‘ New Orleans driveway have garnered national media attention from the likes of the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. In addition to their regular live streams, Big Sam’s Funky Nation served up funky performances from the driveway for both of Democracy Comes Alive’s predecessors, virtual festivals Quarantine Comes Alive and Justice Comes Alive.
For Democracy Comes Alive, however, the band headed over to Rock ‘N’ Bowl for an exuberant performance on a real stage with full production for a pair of funky originals, “4 da Funk” and 2020 release “No More Shakes”.

Big Sam’s Funky Nation – “4 da Funk”, “No More Shakes” – Democracy Comes Alive
Big Sam’s Funky Nation joined 50+ performers and 10+ other speakers as part of Democracy Comes Alive, presented by Live For Live Music in partnership with voter registration nonprofit HeadCount. The 10-hour streaming event, powered by Nugs.TV and Plus 1, generated $40,000 and counting in funds for HeadCount as well as the participating artists, who remain out of work as the pandemic continues. In addition to the funds generated, Democracy Comes Alive led thousands of people to HeadCount’s tools to check your voter registration status and register to vote. For more information, head here.
