On Saturday, October 3rd, singer-songwriter Cris Jacobs took part in Democracy Comes Alive, a one-day, nonpartisan virtual music festival aimed at channeling the power of music to make a critical impact on civic engagement in this November’s elections and beyond.
For his part in the virtual fundraiser, Jacobs offered up a performance of Jackson Browne‘s “World In Motion”. The song stops to take stock of the direction in which the country is heading, and Jacobs indirectly asks listeners if that’s the direction they prefer. In the metaphor of the United States as a whole, impoverished families sleep on the streets while “around the corner you can hear the sound/people dancing ’round that golden calf,” defining the separation of “those who have not/and those who have.”
All built around a toe-tapping, fingerpicking melody, Jacobs is joined by his backing band—comprised of Todd Herrington (bass), Dusty Simmons (drums), Ben White (keys/vocals), and Corey Wells (guitar)—from remotely-recorded bubbles. Even with the instrumentation of drums, bass, electric guitar, and keys, Jacobs’ acoustic guitar and—more importantly—Browne’s lyrics remain the primary focus of the tune.

Cris Jacobs joined 50+ performers and 10+ other speakers as part of Democracy Comes Alive, presented by Live For Live Music in partnership with voter registration nonprofit HeadCount. The 10-hour streaming event, powered by Nugs.TV and Plus 1, generated $40,000 and counting in funds for HeadCount as well as the participating artists, who remain out of work as the pandemic continues. Back in May, Jacobs also participated in Democracy Comes Alive’s predecessor Quarantine Comes Alive. In a similar fundraising style, the one-day virtual festival gathered over 60 artists and raised more than $170,000 for an array of COVID-19 relief causes as well as the participating musicians, who remain out of work and the touring shutdown continues.
