In a big month of news for the Foo Fighters, who were recently announced as headliners for the virtual NIVA benefit, Save Our Stages Fest, the group also stopped by the Troubadour in Los Angeles, CA for an acoustic performance of “Learn To Fly” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The band performed the 1999 There Is Nothing Left To Lose hit with the entire six-piece and featured Dave Grohl on his Gibson acoustic guitar. Chris Shiflett also donned an acoustic axe, while rhythm guitarist Pat Smear opted for a Gibson hollow body. While the band has played this track countless times over their decades-long career, this rendition of “Learn To Fly” was quite powerful.
Aside from the obvious struggles many around the country are going through right now and the soothing powers music can have on that adversity, Grohl’s vocal work stood out as a clear high-point of the performance. Whether its the lengthy time off from touring or a conscious effort to improve, his voice seemed particularly strong for the “Learn To Fly” performance on Kimmel. While the band stayed quite true to the album version of the song, other from the acoustic instruments, of course, something about seeing them on stage after such a long layoff was sure to make fans around the world full of glee.
Back in May, Grohl penned an open letter about the state of music with regards to COVID-19. In the letter Grohl said, “I do know that we will do it again,” referring to concerts. “It’s not a choice. We’re human.” While this performance for Kimmel Live! didn’t have any fans in the seats, it sure must have been a relief for Grohl and the rest of the band to take the stage yet again.
