Gary Clark Jr. and Gustavo Santaolalla have released a new collaborative single, titled “Valley of Last Resort”. The song initially appeared in Freak Power: The Ballot or the Bomb, a documentary chronicling Hunter S. Thompson‘s campaign for Sheriff of Pitkin County, CO in 1970.

The hair-raising tune begins with Santaolalla’s ronroco laying an acoustic foundation for Clark Jr.’s distorted electric guitar. Santaolalla and Clark Jr. trade vocals throughout the tune, building tension throughout the first verse and chorus. “Valley of Last Resort” opens up a bit after that first chorus with the addition of sonic layers and a more prominent rhythm section. While Ajax Phillips and Daniel Joseph Watkins directed the film, the song carries an old-western vibe befitting of a classic Quentin Tarantino film.

Written by Paul Williams, the song’s lyrics are “inspired by the fact that 50 years later we are unfortunately confronted by similar issues as the civil unrest and protests in our country have been on the rise,” said Warner Records in a statement according to Rolling Stone.

Furthermore, while Freak Power: The Ballot or the Bomb did not embark on its planned film festival circuit, it did release on streaming services worldwide earlier this month.
