Goose concluded their latest run of outdoor shows on Monday night at Showtime At The Drive-In in Frederick, Maryland. The band fit the debut of a Bon Iver cover into the first set and ended the night with a guest appearance from Pigeons Playing Ping Pong drummer Alex “Gator” Petropulos.
Percussionist Jeffrey Arevalo was once again on hand to augment the core quartet of guitarist Rick Mitarotonda, drummer Ben Atkind, bassist Trevor Weekz and multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach. The band opened with “Drive” and worked the unfinished version into “Doc Brown.”
“So Ready” came next before Mitarotonda led the band through Bon Iver’s “AUATC,” a song Justin Vernon and company released in August. Goose put their own spin on “AUATC (Ate Up All Their Cake),” which sounded more like a The Band cover than a Bon Iver tune. The frequently paired “Jive I” and “Jive Lee” was followed by “Indian River” and the end of a “Time To Flee” started on Thursday at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio to close the frame.
Goose kicked off the second set with a cover of Fat Freddy’s Drop’s “Fish In The Sea” that bled into the conclusion of “Drive.” The end of “Drive” gave way to “Rosewood Heart,” which Goose jammed into “Travelers.” As the clock ran down, the quintet served up “Turned Clouds.” Then, Anspach informed the crowd the band only had seven minutes left and would go without an encore break. Peter went on to invite Gator to share the stage with Petropulos playing tambourine on the “Hot Tea” finale.
