Governor Andrew Cuomo Confirms $20k Fine For Chainsmokers’ Hamptons Concert Promoter

Back in the summer when artists and live event promoters were still trying to figure out how best to safely hold concerts in states that were struggling to contain COVID-19 cases, pop hitmakers The Chainsmokers made national headlines and drew wide criticism after they performed at a benefit concert in Long Island for an estimated 2,000 attendees where there were no social distancing policies. Tickets to the criticized Hamptons event ranged from $1,250 to $25,000, with proceeds going to benefit various local charities including No Kid HungryChildren’s Medical Fund of NY, and Southampton Fresh Air Home.

Unfortunately for the event’s promoters, the controversial event drew the attention of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who, following an investigation, has decided to fine the show’s producers $20,000 for violating state’s public health laws which were put into effect following the emergence of the global pandemic.

“Following an investigation into the Chainsmokers concert in the Hamptons this summer, the promoters will be fined $20,000 for violating public health law.” Cuomo stated on Wednesday via his Twitter. The New York Governor, who himself has been equally-criticized for his COVID-19 policies, also added “The Town of Southampton cannot approve permits for group gatherings without State approval.”

It’s worth noting that the public backlash for the concert event was so bad that bands within the jam scene including moe. and Twiddle were forced to cancel their own planned outdoor shows the following weekend the state reconfigured its restrictions on live events.

Meanwhile, artists are continuing to take advantage of the drive-in concert format along the eastern U.S. which has allowed event promoters a safer way to throw live performances throughout the fall months.
