Grateful Dead Releases ‘American Beauty: The Angel’s Share’ Outtake Collection

The Grateful Dead‘s full American Beauty: The Angel’s Share compilation has arrived. American Beauty: The Angel’s Share features 56 previously unreleased demos, alternate mixes and outtakes from the recording of the album, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

In August 1970, the Grateful Dead went to work at Pacific High Recording Studio in San Francisco on the follow-up to Workingman’s Dead, which was released just two months prior. American Beauty: The Angel’s Share begins with 10 demos for the 10 songs that would appear on the LP. Additionally, the compilation gives insight into the band’s creative process with partial and complete takes from the American Beauty sessions. Many were recorded at Wally Heider Recording later in the summer of 1970.

Other highlights from American Beauty: The Angel’s Share include a solo rendition of “Attics Of My Life” performed by guitarist Jerry Garcia, an acoustic “Box Of Rain” and the conversations with studio personnel that are interspersed with the music. The release of American Beauty: The Angel’s Share follows a similar compilation for Workingman’s Dead that came out earlier this year.

On October 30, Rhino Records will release American Beauty: 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition and vinyl issue American Beauty: 50th Anniversary Picture Disc. The deluxe edition of the album features a remastered version of the 10-track LP as well as a previously unreleased official recording of the band’s February 18, 1971 concert at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York.
