Grateful Dead Shares ‘Sugar Magnolia’ From Port Chester 1971 Concert

The Grateful Dead unveiled previously unheard audio of “Sugar Magnolia” from the band’s February 18, 1971 concert at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. Audio of the entire show will be released as part of American Beauty: 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition via Rhino on October 30.

Keyboardist Ned Lagin accompanied the Dead at The Cap on a night that included five debuts. “Wharf Rat,” “Playing In The Band,” “Bertha,” “Greatest Story Ever Told” and “Loser” were each premiered at the Port Chester venue. “Sugar Magnolia” was less than a year old at the time and came towards the end of the Grateful Dead’s second set on February 18, 1971.

The Grateful Dead recorded a studio version of “Sugar Magnolia” for inclusion on American Beauty, their second album of 1970. American Beauty: 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition includes a remastered version of the 10-track LP along with the previously unreleased audio from February 18, 1971.
