H.E.R. Shows Off Guitar Skills On New Song “Hold On”, Adele Hosts On ‘Saturday Night Live’ [Watch]

Grammy-winning singer/multi-instrumentalist H.E.R. served as the musical guest on Saturday’s episode of Saturday Night Live. H.E.R. wasn’t the only musician on the bill for the episode, as Adele also made her first-ever appearance as the show’s host.

In addition to a performance of her silky, ’90s R&B-style 2020 single, “Damage”, the “divine” H.E.R.—as Adele referred to her—returned to the stage to debut a new song, “Hold On”. For the new tune, the 23-year-old artist, real name Gabriella Wilson, grabbed a reflective silver Stratocaster to accompany her soulful vocals with distortion-laced guitar leads. The Prince vibes are readily apparent from the start of the new song, but it’s the climactic guitar solo that solidifies the comparisons. We agree with Adele—this girl is divine. Watch H.E.R. perform “Damage” and debut “Hold On” on SNL below:

H.E.R. even used her SNL spot to lend her voice to an ongoing social justice campaign. Her bandmates on “Hold On” all wore shirts emblazoned with “#EndSARS“, a campaign that aims to end police brutality in Nigeria (SARS stands for “Special Anti-Robbery Squad”, a unit of the African country’s law enforcement). Though the campaign has existed for some time, it has jumped into headlines of late after an Amnesty International report that Nigerian law enforcement forces had shot at two peace protest gatherings on Tuesday night, killing twelve people.

H.E.R. recently served as one of the biggest highlights of the Emmys broadcast, where she delivered a cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” for the award show’s “In Memoriam” segment.

Adele, for her part, participated in a number of amusing sketches but only spoke briefly about her upcoming musical projects. After noting her excitement about finally hosting the show that had helped break her career in the U.S. “twelve very long years ago,” she explained that she opted to host and not perform because her “album’s not finished” and she’s too scared to do both. I’d rather just put on a few wigs, have a glass of wine or six, and see what happens.” Watch Adele’s SNL monologue below:
