Guitarist Bob Weir was born in San Francisco on this date in 1947. Weir co-founded the Grateful Dead in 1965 and was a key member of the band through their dissolution following Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995. Bobby’s signature rhythmic guitar work and impressive songwriting ability helped the Grateful Dead develop a sound all their own and a huge fanbase. “Playing In The Band,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Truckin’,” “The Other One” and “Cassidy” are just a few classic Grateful Dead tunes Weir had a hand in writing and sang lead on with the band.
Weir kept busy with extracurricular activities before Jerry’s passing and has been a member of a number of groups over the past 25 years. Grateful Dead | July 10, 1990
The Grateful Dead brought their Summer Tour 1990 to Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, North Carolina on July 10, 1990. Previously unseen video of the entire concert was premiered earlier this year as part of the Dead’s Shakedown Stream series. Weir was joined in the band at the time by Garcia, bassist Phil Lesh, keyboardist Brent Mydland and drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. The performance also featured Bruce Hornsby on accordion. Bob Weir And RatDog | July 12, 1997
Weir formed RatDog just before Jerry’s death and focused on the project for long stretches of the period between 1995 and 2014. Bob Weir & RatDog teamed up with The Black Crowes, Jorma Kaukonen, Planet Drum, Arlo Guthrie, Bruce Hornsby, Sherri Jackson and moe. for the Furthur Festival tour during the summer of 1997. The excursion came to the Polaris Amphitheater in Columbus, Ohio on July 12, 1997. RatDog’s lineup at the time saw Weir backed by bassist Rob Wasserman, harmonica player Matthew Kelly, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, saxophonist Dave Ellis and drummer Jay Lane. Furthur | Feburary 23, 2013
In 2009, Bob Weir co-founded Furthur with Phil Lesh and the pair settled in on a lineup that also featured drummer Joe Russo, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, lead guitarist John Kadlecik and vocalists Jeff Pehrson and Sunshine Becker by the following year. Furthur was Bobby’s main project through early 2014. The band’s last busy year was 2013 and included a three-night stand at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado February 22 – 24. Dead And Company | October 31, 2019
Dead & Company made their debut on October 29, 2015 featuring Bobby joined by GD band mates Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann as well as guitarist John Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The sextet has gone on to play over 150 additional concerts over the past five years. On October 31, 2019, D&C kicked off a “Fall Fun Run” by honoring lyricist Robert Hunter, who passed away the previous month, as they loaded their first of two performances at Madison Square Garden in New York City with songs Hunter penned. In recent years, Weir has spent time on the road with both Dead & Company and Bob Weir & Wolf Bros. Bobby is backed by bassist Don Was and drummer Jay Lane in Bob Weir & Wolf Bros. The trio embarked on its debut tour in fall of 2018 and followed with spring and fall tours in 2019. In 2020, the three-piece played a five-show run at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California before beginning an excursion that was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
