Iowa Hawkeyes Quarterback Spencer Petras Discusses Grateful Dead Fandom

Iowa Hawkeyes quarterback Spencer Petras spoke about his love for the Grateful Dead during a Zoom news conference with reporters recently as per the Associated Press. The sophomore grew up in San Rafael, California, home of GD bassist Phil Lesh‘s Terrapin Crossroads venue and not far from where Bob Weir lives.

“I’ve tried to get some guys on board (with Grateful Dead),” Petras quipped. “I know [Hawkeyes offensive lineman] Tyler Linderbaum likes the studio version of ‘Casey Jones,’ that kind of thing. I haven’t gotten him in too deep, yet… I’m working on it.”

News of Spencer’s Grateful Dead fandom is no surprise to those that follow him on Twitter. Petras, whose high school graduation party was held at Terrapin Crossroads according to the AP, has retweeted Grateful Dead content a number of times over the past month. One of his most recent retweets is of a post by Billy Strings.

Spencer will soon step into the spotlight, when he makes his first appearance as starting quarterback for the Hawkeyes on October 24.
