Saturday Night Live was back on the air last night (Oct. 10th) after initially returning last week following an extensive hiatus over the spring due to COVID-19. As the famous sketch comedy show is reacclimating itself to American audiences in the COVID era, so are its musical guests. This week’s featured artist was guitarist Jack White, who found himself on the SNL stage on short notice after country singer Morgan Wallen was disinvited for flouting the show’s COVID safety protocols just days prior to taping.

Although his appearance was on short notice, it sure didn’t sound anything less than a typical Jack White rock experience. The guitarist first took the stage with a trio lineup featuring drummer Daru Jones and bassist Dominic John Davis to tear through a groovy rendition of The White Stripes‘ “Ball and Biscuit”, which was reworked to feature teases of his Beyoncé collab “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and Willie Johnson‘s “Jesus Is Coming Soon”. The latter song was originally penned about the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, Spin reports, making it a fitting tease for today’s troubled times. White returned to the stage later on in the show with a blue-colored guitar modeled after the one made famous by late guitarist Eddie Van Halen for his performance of “Lazaretto”.
