Phish Debuts ‘Guy Forget’ On Fall Tour 2000

119

This year marks 25 years since Phish’s historic Fall Tour 1995. In recognition of that noteworthy tour and to make up for the lack of shows this fall, JamBase presents a daily retrospective highlighting a noteworthy moment from a Phish fall tour concert that took place on that date over the past 25. The 25 Years Of Phish Fall Tour series runs each day between the start of Phish Fall Tour 1995 on September 27 through that tour’s finale on December 17.

The worlds of Phish and tennis collided on this date in 2000 when the band served up their first official performance of “Guy Forget” at Desert Sky Pavilion in Phoenix. “Guy Forget” shares its name with a French tennis player who was active from 1982 – 1997.

Phish’s third of four appearances at Desert Sky Pavilion followed a famed two-night run at Las Vegas’ Thomas & Mack Center. “Guy Forget” emerged out of “Piper” towards the start of the band’s second set on October 1, 2000.

Read a description of what went down via a JamBase flashback article:

Guitarist Trey Anastasio, just one night removed from a birthday celebration, spent the first few minutes of “Piper” stringing together one aggressive riff after another. He then focused on rhythm as his band mates latched onto a funky groove. Anastasio, drummer Jon Fishman and bassist Mike Gordon sang “oooh-oohs” as they patiently worked over the dance-able groove.

Trey and Fish then started to chant lyrics from a poem lyricist Tom Marshall had written including a line (“or will I dance on grave”) that would turn up in “Mock Song” on the 2002 album Round Room. From there, Anastasio and Fishman began to sing “I never met a man who I could not forget except for Guy Forget” over and over again. The line, which Phish.net states was written by Anastasio and childhood friend Dave Abrahams, had first surfaced in early ’90s soundchecks in reference to French tennis player Guy Forget, who accumulated a 380 – 291 record between 1982 and 1997. Phish went back to free-form jamming with Fish occasionally throwing in the line about Forget. The improvisation throughout the 20+ minute segment is all over the place with Trey utilizing the keyboard that was part of his rig at the time and Fishman keeping the beat steady throughout nearly the entire magnificent piece of music.

Phish would go on to name-check Guy Forget during the “You Enjoy Myself” vocal jam on October 16, 2010 in North Charleston, South Carolina. Then, the quartet fit the only other performance of the song into “Ghost” on September 4, 2011 in Commerce City, Colorado. More recently, “Guy Forget” was quoted by Anastasio and Fishman on December 28, 2019 in New York City towards the end of “Drowned” and “Chalk Dust Torture.” Later that night, the drummer sang “Guy Forget” instead of “waste the day” during “Character Zero.”

Watch Phish work “Piper” into “Guy Forget” below in bonus footage from Live In Vegas:
