This year marks 25 years since Phish’s historic Fall Tour 1995. In recognition of that noteworthy tour and to make up for the lack of shows this fall, JamBase presents a daily retrospective highlighting a noteworthy moment from a Phish fall tour concert that took place on that date over the past 25. The 25 Years Of Phish Fall Tour series runs each day between the start of Phish Fall Tour 1995 on September 27 through that tour’s finale on December 17.
Phish and professional sports have intersected numerous times during the band’s 35+ year career. One such meshing of Phish and sports happened on October 29, 2014 when the band was in San Francisco for three shows at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium that aligned with the Giants playing in the World Series.

Other instances of “Phishports” include singing the national anthem before NBA and NHL games, throwing out the first pitch and holding concerts in MLB stadiums, coaxing NFL quarterback Russell Wilson to play “Wilson” when he takes the field during Seattle Seahawks games (which led to Wilsons in other sports using the song too), and turning Madison Square Garden into a golf course. On other occasions — pre-smartphones — guitarist Trey Anastasio kept fans at the show updated with scores of important games happening simultaneously. Trey himself has been spotted attending NHL games over the years, and has made his love of the Philadelphia Flyers known from the stage many times as well.
Phish’s Fall Tour 2014 brought the band to San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium for shows on October 27, 28 and 29. The three-night stand coincided with MLB’s World Series, which was being contested by the American League’s Kansas City Royals and the hometown National League champion San Francisco Giants. October 27, 2014, was an off day for the Royals and Giants, who were heading back to KC for Games 6 and, if needed, Game 7. The Giants took a 3-2 game advantage to Kauffman Stadium, needing to win a decisive fourth game to take the best-of-seven series.
On the 27th, Phish made note of the Giants’ World Series bid by encoring with an instrumental version of the baseball-themed classic, “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.” On October 28, while Phish played the middle night of the run, the Giants lost Game 6, setting up a winner-take-all Game 7 against the Royals the following evening.
Phish took the stage at BGCA during the ninth inning of Game 7, with the Giants leading the Royals by one run. Instead of waiting for the final out, Phish began the show with “Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan.” They then treated the Bay Area audience to the nautical “The Moma Dance” as Game 7 of the World Series approached its thrilling conclusion. Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner, with the tying runner on third base, induced a foul ball pop-up by the Royals Juan Pérez that was squeezed by Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval for the third and final out.
Fans at BGCA didn’t need Trey to give them an update as cheers erupted inside the venue once the Giants clinched the World Series win. In response, “The Moma Dance” was interrupted by Queen’s anthem “We Are The Champions” as the hometown baseball fans in attendance celebrated the Giants’ earning another title. After finishing “Moma,” a couple of songs later, Trey again teased “We Are The Champions” during bassist Mike Gordon’s “Yarmouth Road.”
Near the end of the first set, the crowd broke into Giants chant, prompting keyboardist Page McConnell to congratulate the team and its fans for the World Series win. Trey noted Page’s affinity for the New York Mets and revealed the keyboardist watches games on his phone during shows. Phish then played “The Line,” which Trey dedicated to those who lose at sports.
The Giants’ Fall Classic win wasn’t the only pop-culture reference Phish made on October 29, 2014. The encore that night began with their Junta favorite, “Contact.” Trey incorporated Megan Trainor’s hit “All About That Bass” at the end of “Contact” following questions of plagiarism after similarities between the two were pointed out.
Five years later on Summer Tour 2019, Phish found themselves in St. Louis on the same night the St. Louis Blues won the NHL’s Stanley Cup, which they clinched during setbreak. The band celebrated the occasion by opening the second set with the team’s theme song, Laura Branigan’s “Gloria.”
