This year marks 25 years since Phish’s historic Fall Tour 1995. In recognition of that noteworthy tour and to make up for the lack of shows this fall, JamBase presents a daily retrospective highlighting a noteworthy moment from a Phish fall tour concert that took place on that date over the past 25. The 25 Years Of Phish Fall Tour series runs each day between the start of Phish Fall Tour 1995 on September 27 through that tour’s finale on December 17.
Phish treated fans to a memorable version of “Twenty Years Later” on this date during their Fall Tour 2018 opener at the Times-Union Center in Albany, New York. The tour opener in Albany was one of four Phish shows held on October 16 since 1995, as the band also played Lake Placid in 1996, North Charleston in 2010 and Jacksonville in 2016.
Originally known as the Knickerbocker Arena, the Albany venue hosted the band 11 times between 1995 and 2009. However, it would take Phish nine years to return to the Times-Union Center. The quartet began their 14-show Fall Tour 2018 with two nights in Albany. A 15-minute “Twenty Years Later” that stands among the best in the song’s history came as part of a seamless, seven-song second set at the tour opener.

Phish Returns To ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ On This Date In 2016
Phish debuted the Trey Anastasio and Tom Marshall-penned “Twenty Years Later” on June 5, 2009 in Wantagh, New York. The band included the song on Joy, their 2009 studio album, and have performed “Twenty Years Later” a total of 38 times. Only a handful of versions saw the group go “Type II” with the rendition in Albany, a take from Reading in 2013 and monster from Camden in 2019 standing out from the rest.
Fall Tour 2018 got underway with a first set filled with staples including “The Moma Dance,” “Theme From The Bottom,” “Free,” “Halley’s Comet” and “Walls Of The Cave.” Both “Tube” and “Everything’s Right” were the improvisational highlights of the frame. Phish kicked off the second set with a 30+ minute run of “Ghost” > “No Men In No Man’s Land” > “Piper” before digging into “Twenty Years Later.” The band blew past the song’s usual structure and embarked on a wild jam featuring extensive use of Whammy from Trey, eerie tones from keyboardist Page McConnell and bassist Mike Gordon connecting with drummer Jon Fishman on a meaty groove. It was a clinic in freeform psychedelia that ended when Anastasio suddenly began singing the end of the song.
A particularly emotional “Show Of Life” followed before the second set came to a close with the pairing of “Also Sprach Zarathrustra” and “Character Zero.” Phish tacked on a “Harry Hood” encore for good measure to end the evening.
