Today, October 2, marks three years since Tom Petty’s tragic death in 2017. In remembrance, JamBase takes a look at a Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers set from Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit on this date in 1994 from Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California.
The show is notable for a few reasons. One, the band — consisting of Petty, guitarist Mike Campbell, pianist Benmont Tench, guitarist Scott Thurston, bassist Howie Epstein and drummer Stan Lynch — performs in an acoustic format. Second, the show is one of Lynch’s last with The Heartbreakers before Dave Grohl briefly joined the band ahead of the recruitment of Steve Ferrone on the kit. Third, while the band plays a number of hits, they also include a few deep cuts.
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers kick off the show with one of those obscurities, “Thirteen Days.” The Heartbreakers then get to more familiar material with “I Won’t Back Down” and “Girl On LSD,” the latter of which was the B-side to the single “You Don’t Know How It Feels” from Petty’s latest album at the time, Wildflowers. “Girl On LSD,” however, didn’t appear on the album.
The deep cuts continued with “King’s Highway” from The Heartbreakers’ 1991 album Into The Great Wide Open before Petty and company got into the hits in earnest with “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” “Learning To Fly,” “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” “Time to Move On” and “Runnin’ Down A Dream.” Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers closed out the set with “Free Fallin.’”
