Spafford Releases ‘Live, Vol. 3’, Culled From Seven Years Of Concerts [Stream]

89

On Thursday, Spafford shared its long-awaited Live, Vol. 3 compilation album. Spanning over seven years of live performances, the collection comes after a four-year gap between Live, Vol. 2, and five years after the seminal Live, Vol. 1.

The Flagstaff, AZ-bred jam quartet has remained largely radio silent since getting in on the first wave of drive-in concerts back in May with a show at Digital Drive In in Meza, AZ. Since then, the group has appeared at the Democracy Comes Alive virtual festival and continues to mine its archives for musical gems.

The seven-track, 84-minute offering resembles an actual concert as it opens up with an exploratory, 10-minute “Soundcheck” jam. This first track is actually the oldest on the live album, coming from the group’s August 10th, 2013 concert at The Sail Inn in Tempe, AZ, just prior to Spafford breaking out on the national stage. From there, things get much more recent with “Gold Glittered Hat” from Chicago’s Thalia Hall on October 18th, 2019. This rendition was only the band’s third-ever take on the song—which they’ve played just nine times to date—and also featured a sit in from Jason Singer on saxophone, the only special guest appearance found on Live, Vol. 3.

After that comes a 25-minute run through “In The Eyes of Thieves” from Tuner Hall Ballroom in Milwaukee, WI on May 25th, 2019; followed by the “Lovesick Melody” and “Soil” from Camp Bisco on July 29th, 2019, the latter of which ran for an impressive 15 minutes. Spafford then dipped back into the archives from April 12th, 2017 at Great Scott in Allston, MA with “Mind’s Unchained”, one of the band’s final shows with original drummer Nick Tkachyk, who departed for a two-year hiatus and was replaced by Cameron Laforest, and eventually rejoined the group last May. Finally, Live, Vol. 3 wraps up with “People” from the Barkley Ballroom in Frisco, CO on May 30th, 2014.
