Neil Young shared the previously unreleased song “Homefires.” The track will appear on Young’s upcoming Archives Volume II: 1972 – 1976 retrospective due out on November 20.
“Homefires” resides on Disc 6 (1974): The Old Homestead of the expansive 10-disc set. Young put “Homefires” to tape during the Homegrown sessions, an album Neil recorded in the latter half of 1974 between releasing On The Beach and the sessions for Zuma. Homegrown saw the light of day in June 2020 although “Homefires” didn’t appear on the LP.
While the studio version of “Homefires” has never been released, Young debuted the song live in 1974 and played it throughout that year before shelving it until 1992, as per Sugar Mountain. After ’92, Neil only played the song a handful of times until 2018. He did recently perform the song from his home in Telluride, fittingly for his Fireside Sessions II, recorded on March 26, 2020.
