Earlier this month, The Flaming Lips teased the idea of hosting a concert with fans in attendance by utilizing those clear, lifesize plastic bubbles that the band has displayed during their virtual performances recently. Fans of the psychedelic rock band already know the famous bubble well, as singer Wayne Coyne has used the same kind of plastic sphere to ride over the heads of audience members during the band’s concerts in years past.

On Monday, The Flaming Lips hosted their planned performance with fans in bubbles at the Criterion in their hometown of Oklahoma City, OK. The use of the bubble devices, which were made in and shipped from China, allowed fans to experience live music in an indoor setting without the fear of contracting or spreading COVID-19. According to Setlist.fm, the band made sure to perform some of their new songs including “Brother Eye” and “Assassins of Youth”.

Watch the Instagram video from Monday’s performance below as shared by Wayne Coyne.

The Flaming Lips returned earlier this year with their Deap Lips collaboration EP alongside Deap Valley released back in March, followed by the more recent arrival of their own American Head studio album last month.

According to reports, the Oklahoma City venue is already planning more “Safe and memorable shows this month,” but will likely be without The Flaming Lips’ trademark bubble devices.
