The Smashing Pumpkins Release Heavy New Single “Wyttch”, Music Video For “Ramona” [Listen/Watch]

93

It wouldn’t be Halloween without The Smashing Pumpkins, and the band delivered with a new single, “Wyttch”, released on Friday. Plus, in true Smashing Pumpkins fashion of bombarding fans with new releases, the band also put out a music video for the new track “Ramona”. The songs come from the band’s forthcoming double album Cyr, due out on November 27th.

Last week, frontman Billy Corgan shed some more light on the background of Cyr by revealing that it’s actually volume two of the band’s 2018 reunion record, Shiny And Oh So Bright Vol. 1/LP: No Past. No Present. No Future. Even though this next chapter has yet to be released, The Smashing Pumpkins are already working on volume three—in addition to a myriad of other project—to be released at a later date.

On “Wyttch” The Smashing Pumpkins are able to tap into that raw energy that made them a 90s powerhouse. The hard-driving rhythms found on the new track have been somewhat lacking in previously-released singles such as the album’s title track, “The Colour of Your Love”, and “Confessions of a Dopamine Addict“. Those songs explored the lighter side of The Smashing Pumpkins’ sound, with a heavy emphasis on the alienated lyrics that also serve as a cornerstone of the group’s aura. However on “Wyttch”, fans get a taste of some of the pent-up rage and grunge influences that built such hits as “Zero”, “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”, and more.

Meanwhile on “Ramona”, also released today, the band toggles back to the poppy, synth-laden sounds that have thus far defined Cyr. Taken in context next to “Wyttch”, “Ramona” at least shows that the band has not last track of its roots and is able to execute both styles concurrently. Together, they form a portrait of a band that is recognizant of its past while still able to forge a new path ahead after all these years.
