The String Cheese Incident Shares Live “Honky Tonk Heroes” In Memory Of Billy Joe Shaver [Watch]

On Wednesday, outlaw-country pioneer Billy Joe Shaver passed away at the age of 81. Since then, tributes have come pouring in from across the music world for the iconic singer-songwriter. Among his many admirers were The String Cheese Incident, who shared their live rendition of “Honky Tonk Heroes” upon learning of his passing.

During his nearly six decade career in music, Shaver’s songs were recorded by the likes of Willie NelsonWaylon JenningsJohnny Cash, and many more. In fact, 10 of the 11 songs on Jennings’ breakthrough album, Honky Tonk Heroes, were Shaver originals including the title track.

The clip shared on Wednesday comes from Cheese’s show at The Backyard in Austin on July 5th, 2013. Ahead of the cover, frontman Bill Nershi advises the crowd, “We’re gonna play you a bit of Texas music here, a bit of Texas country.” After expressing his admiration for Shaver, Nershi gets started on the lyrics for one of the first songs to put Shaver on the map.

This lean 4:14 minute telling of the song obviously wasn’t going to be any kind of huge jam, but the band still found a way to stretch it out a bit while maintaining the song’s true honky tonk nature. Some subtle Kyle Hollingsworth-led improvisation leads into sparing notes from Michael Kang that brings the song to a satisfied close.

Since his passing, other tributes to Shaver have come in from fellow like-minded musicians like Jason Isbell and even the team over at Squidbillies on Adult Swim. Shaver recorded the theme song for the raunchy cartoon that seeks to satirize a hyperbolized version of the people who would listen to his music. Additionally, longtime friend and sometimes musical partner Willie Nelson shared an interview the two did in SiriusXM back in 2012.
