Trey Anastasio performed one of the more unusual versions of Phish classic “Wolfman’s Brother” during his The Beacon Jams livestream concert on Friday, October 16. Anastasio was backed by the four-piece “Rescue Squad Strings” as well as longtime Trey Anastasio Band members keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, bassist Tony Markellis and percussionist Cyro Baptista for “Wolfman’s” as part of his second weekly livestream concert originating from The Beacon Theatre in New York City.
The guitarist shared official video of Friday’s “Wolfman’s Brother.” Anastasio, his band and the four-piece string section consisting of Anja Wood, Rachel Golub, Katie Kresek and Maxim Moston played the Hoist gem towards the middle of the two-and-a-half-hour performance.
Longtime Trey collaborator Don Hart wrote the charts for the strings, but the inventive “Wolfman’s” was also notable for what Baptista and Paczkowski added to the mix. Cyro used brushes on a box to provide the beat and Ray delivered an outstanding electric piano solo on his Wurlitzer. Anastasio went with an acoustic, focusing on singing rather than the fretboard fireworks at the heart of Phish versions of “Wolfman’s Brother.”
