Umphrey’s McGee wrapped up their run at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday. As they had done the night before, UM paid homage to Eddie Van Halen.
Umphrey’s got things underway in a pretty good downpour after a substantial weather delay with the shimmering opening strains of “There’s No Crying In Mexico” which headed into the “Rocker Part 2.” Guitarist Brendan Bayliss led the band through the tune backed up by keyboardist Joel Cummins on vocals. The song saw guitarist Jake Cinninger peeling off characteristically wild stuff punctuated by some beastly drumming from Kris Myers before the band dropped into a heavy jam that Cinninger triumphantly built up and brought to a close. After “Draconian,” UM delivered a section of vintage material with “All In Time” into “Mulche’s Odyssey” followed by more classics in “Night Nurse” and “Wife Soup” to close out the set.
@taragracerfoto @collectivpresentsThe classics continued in the second set which kicked off with “40s Theme” followed by yet more vintage material in “The Triple Wide,” “Hajimemashite” and “Phil’s Farm,” which would lead into a rare cover of “I Heard It Through The Grapevine.” It marked the first time Umphrey’s played the soul song — which UM does instrumental in the style of Bill Frisell — since January 2019 and just the second time in 6 years, as per All Thing Umphreys. The band would find their way back to “Phil’s Farm” by way of “Glory” before closing out the second set with “Higgins” into “Cemetary Walk II.” After a heartfelt thank you — the show was UM’s last of 2020 — Jake Cinninger delivered a spot on rendition of Eddie Van Halen’s solo guitar masterpiece, “Eruption,” which then headed back into “All In Time” to bring the evening to a close.
